Newport Middle Passage (NMP) Memorial is an UNESCO Site of Memory. The Memorial design proposal encompasses the entire triangular site between Thames Street and the access roads to America’s Cup Avenue. Within that small park there will be two newly built components: an oval-shaped open-air space made of cross-laminated heavy timber and a long waist-high panel along Thames Street where maps, quotations, texts and images will display facts about the Triangle Trade and stories of African and African American life in Newport. The State of Rhode Island owns the site, and it is managed by the Newport Parks Department. The Memorial will be a presented as a gift to the people of the city and state. The structures will be fully accessible from Thames Street. The rest of the site will be designed with the State to assure the safety of pedestrians and automobile traffic.
